n the 1920s and early 30s, the two-handed set shot dominated the game. Then, a few years later it was discovered that the one-handed, overhead shot could be far more accurate. That caused the scores to rise, but the philosophy to stop this increased scoring meant that the defense had to defend closer — and foul if necessary, just to stop the scoring. Personal fouls increased accordingly. More shots, so more fouls. Some may argue that coaches and players are choosing the same approach today, if not by design, then in effect. That is, do what is necessary to stop the offense.
