2002-03 NCAA Basketball Rule Changes

“Speed up the game.” That seems to be the justification for one significant change affecting the men’s and women’s rules for the coming season. Here are the changes that affect both men’s and women’s play.

No FTs in Bonus?

No free throws will be shot if the offense (team in control of the ball) fouls and the defense is in bonus. Instead, the defense gets the ball. This was an experimental rule for the men last year prior to conference play in selected game venues, and now has been adopted for the coming year.

The offended team is awarded possession at a designated spot. The foul, of course, counts for personals (disqualification) and team foul totals.
