The So-called Bias Factor in Officiating
Is there really a home-court advantage?

The first thing you have to do to examine this issue is to begin from the "advantage" point that you just know teams are winning who simply aren't  supposed to.  The wrong team – having the lesser skills, the poorer motivation, the lack of team talent, and oh, yes, the one that owns the playing field or court – is winning and didn’t deserve to.

The scientific study

The study comes out of Wolverton, England – the university, to be specific, and was published in the NewScientist.  I don’t know how "new" it is, but my scientific training tells me that this study proves nothing but something to gossip about.

You see, university researcher Alan Nevill filmed his favorite soccer team and then took video clips of 47 tackles in a match and showed them to two groups of soccer officials – one with sound playing, and one without sound.  [Now there is a scientific approach for you, which eliminates all bias and makes this ‘study’ publishable.]
