he new National Federation rules are now out, and we can thank them for not monkeying around with them too badly. Each spring I shudder in anticipation of any "bright new ideas the contributing coaches might put forward. Or worse, what wild-hair idea was contumaciously and simultaneously passed down from the NCAA rules committee in a truly misplayed though good-intentioned effort to keep high school and college rules similar?

I've said it before, but it is worth repeating. Since I photoshoot so many basketball games — and do so from officials' angles and court locations — I see officiating mistakes. Don't get me wrong: I also see some great officiating, and when the opportunity occasions, I compliment an official for getting a particularly difficult call right.

On the other hand, I also (frequently) bite my tongue about some routinely missed calls when I see officials not only no-call something but outright get it wrong. That leads me to the one call I think officials miss far too often: the block/charge.
