ou have been scampering up and down the court for the past few minutes. The game is being played at a feverish pace. There have been a number of fast breaks, and your stamina is being tested. You now hear the loud shrill of your partner's whistle and think to yourself: "Thank God."
Time to relax? Think again! This is the time when you need to remain sharp and focused. The ball may be dead — but you shouldn't be!
A whole section of our rulebook is dedicated to Live Ball and Dead Ball (Rule 6). But to understand when a ball becomes dead, we must also understand how it also becomes alive.
Live ball
Rule 6-1-2 - The ball becomes alive:
a. On a jump ball, the tossed ball leaves the referee's hand(s).
b. On a throw-in, it is at the disposal of the thrower.
c. On a free throw, it is at the disposal of the free thrower.
