At the beginning of the game many officials stand together at center court and shoot the breeze. Often, one of the officials will be standing with his back to the players. Obviously, that is not the correct mechanic.

A quick review

The officials should be standing on the sideline at the top of the key: 

Referee: 

Stands opposite the home team's bench where he observes the visiting team's members.

Umpire:

Stands opposite the visiting team's bench where he observes the home team's members.
