A review of what led up to our toss
Before the start of our game, our referee and umpire conducted a pregame. They left the locker room — prepared, confident, and ready to take charge. As a crew, they walked onto the court 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the game. They walked to their pregame positions and observed the players. While there, they used that time to their advantage. The referee then took care of his duties at the table (checking the score books, instructing the timer and scorers) while his partner continued to monitor and observe the players. Finally, their coaches' and captains' meeting took place. After the national anthem and players' introductions, they were ready to toss.
Our toss
Our referee with the game ball in hand proceeded to the sideline opposite the table. The umpire stood on the court table side, straddling the division line. He checked with the table personnel and was informed that everyone was ready. The players settled into and around the center circle, and our referee moved into his position. A quick glance at his partner confirmed that he and the table personnel were ready.
