Between the time our official observes a violation and the thrower is handed the ball, the ball is "dead." It is during that dead ball time that officials need to remain in control and observant of their surroundings.

In another article, I wrote:

You have been scampering up and down the court for the past few minutes. The game is being played at a feverish pace. There have been a number of fast breaks, and your stamina is being tested. You now hear the loud shrill of your partner's whistle and think to yourself: "Thank God."

Time to relax? Think again! This is the time when you need to remain sharp and focused. The ball may be dead — but you shouldn't be!
