The last installment in this series talked about various ways that you might be able to "correct" a bad call, even though technically, the rules say that once a call is made, it can't be changed or fixed. We'll finish that topic in this article, and then next time go on to talk about Fixable Mistakes.

No-calls

 

There are no rules that cover "correcting" a no-call, so this might seem like a non-topic. But the point at which it's too late to call something is a subject that needs to be understood, and this seems like as good a time as any.

The official name for "correcting" a no-call is a "late whistle." It can be as late as several seconds under certain circumstances; but whenever it occurs, it must be handled properly. Let's talk about details.

For the bad call, I outlined a sequence of events:

  • (1) the infraction or what appears to be an infraction;
  • (2) more play;
  • (3) the whistle;
  • (4) the call;
