I've written seven pieces in this series about how to handle the different things that can go wrong; and which things can't be fixed — and which can — and when and how. Now I'm going to answer the question that many emailers think I should have addressed at the very beginning, which is: "How do I prevent or avoid situations that lead to errors?" Fortunately, the answer is simple and can be expressed in a single word: "Be aware!" (Just kidding: These days, everybody is talking about President Elect Obama; I just thought we ought to keep Sen. Biden in mind.)
OK, in one word, then: awareness.
Use your eyes, use your ears, and then...
Always be aware of everything. That's the best way to avoid problems. Here are some details:
- Every time the clock starts, check to be sure it is running properly.
- Every time the whistle is blown, look to see that the clock is stopped.
- Every basket should be added to the score; be sure that it happens.
- Every foul needs to be added to the team total.
