When you click on the fight song for Illinois, it is hard to explain why this "march," played by a marching band, could be so controversial. That is, unless you know the name: "Oskee Wow Wow." You see, anything having to do with Indian likenesses — names, songs, hand waving, apparel — is now coming under fire. Illinois' Chief Illiniwek is just one example.
Not unlike the Confederate flag issue, historical use of Native Indians and their cultural artifacts to provide motivational value to sports teams and competitive spirit to student bodies is gaining greater notoriety and has become a very controversial issue.
